Good Feels

🐴 Baby Season is here at Assateague!
Spring is officially foal season on Assateague Island National Seashore, and the wild herd is welcoming its newest little ones to the island! 🌊✨ The Maryland herd — managed by the National Park Service and kept at a healthy 80–100 horses — is one of the most iconic sights on the entire Eastern Shore. About two-thirds of foals arrive between April and June, meaning summer visitors have a great shot at spotting wobbly-legged newborns exploring the dunes and marshes for the very first time. Want to track the herd and even help name a foal? The Assateague Island Alliance runs annual "Name That Horse" auctions where you can bid on naming rights — proceeds go straight back to wild horse management. 🏷️🐎
Here's where it gets really fun 🤓 — these horses aren't your average ponies! They've evolved over centuries to thrive on salty marsh grasses, which means they drink twice as much water as a typical horse, giving them their famously round, bloated bellies. 🫃 Each horse in the Maryland herd is tracked with a unique alphanumeric Keiper number so scientists can trace lineage and monitor the herd's health year-round. And while visitors often call them ponies, the National Park Service officially considers them horses — just compact and tough from island life! 💪 If you spot one this summer, remember the golden rule: stay at least 40 feet away (that's one bus length!), never feed them, and let mama do her thing. These wild beauties have been calling this barrier island home for centuries — and long may they roam! 🌅

Nothing. It just waved!
OC Tidal Trivia
🏖️ Assateague’s Almost Town
Imagine buying your dream beach house… only for the Atlantic Ocean to say "absolutely not." 🌊😤 In the early 1950s, developer Leon Ackerman had BIG plans for Assateague Island — a full-blown seaside community called Ocean Beach, complete with 15 miles of surveyed oceanfront lots, residential streets, and even commercial property. The centerpiece was a paved road called Baltimore Boulevard (wild fact: parts of it still exist today, buried under sand and scrub!) running 10 miles south of Ocean City. 🛣️ Sounds dreamy, right? There was just one tiny problem — actually, a few of them. No sewer. No water. Clouds of flies. 🪰 Oh, and the only way to get there was a ferry from the mainland that could carry exactly three cars per trip. THREE. 🚢😅 Needless to say, early sales were… a tough sell.
But Ackerman kept pushing, and by fall of 1961 he had sold several thousand lots with 30 homes built or under construction. Ocean Beach was actually happening! 🎉 And then came March 6, 1962. The legendary Ash Wednesday Storm — one of the most catastrophic nor'easters in Mid-Atlantic history — absolutely demolished what had been built, wiping out homes, roads, and infrastructure in a single catastrophic blow. 💨🌧️ Just like that, Ocean Beach was gone forever. Today, the entire site is protected as the beautiful Assateague Island National Seashore 🐴🌅 — a stunning reminder that some places were always meant to stay wild.
